Sondrio sits at 360 metres in the heart of the Valtellina, the long east-west valley that follows the Adda River from Lake Como to the Swiss border. It's an Alpine town with a distinctly different character from Italy's Dolomite resorts — more working valley than ski village, with a serious food and wine culture that draws Italians rather than international tourists.

The town's history is shaped by its strategic position controlling the Alpine passes. From the 16th to 18th centuries, Sondrio was governed by the Three Grey Leagues of the Grisons (now part of Switzerland), leaving an architectural and cultural imprint visible in the palazzi along Via Cesare Battisti. The valley's terraced vineyards — 2,500 km of dry-stone walls supporting Nebbiolo grapes — are a UNESCO candidate and produce Sforzato di Valtellina, one of Italy's most distinctive red wines.

Sondrio is the ideal base for exploring the wider Valtellina: Bormio (thermal baths and 2026 Winter Olympic alpine events, 45 km north), Tirano (Bernina Express departure point, 25 km east), and the Stelvio National Park to the north. Sondrio itself was named Alpine Town of the Year in 2007 for its commitment to sustainable development and the Alpine Convention.
