About Marche
Italy's best-kept secret
Marche (the Marches) is often described as 'all of Italy in one region' — and it's not an exaggeration. Stretching from the Adriatic Sea in the east to the Apennine peaks in the west, it packs 180 km of coastline, the rolling hills of the interior, and mountains reaching 2,476 metres into a compact 9,344 km². Unlike its neighbour Tuscany, Marche remains relatively undiscovered by international tourism, meaning you get Renaissance cities, medieval hill towns, and blue-flag beaches with far fewer crowds and lower prices.
The region's cultural capital is Urbino, a UNESCO World Heritage city and the birthplace of Raphael. The Ducal Palace, built for Federico da Montefeltro in the 15th century, is one of the Renaissance's greatest architectural achievements — its studiolo (tiny study) inlaid with trompe l'oeil wood panels depicting books, musical instruments, and scientific instruments is a small masterpiece. The Galleria Nazionale delle Marche inside holds works by Piero della Francesca, Raphael, and Titian.
The Conero Riviera, south of Ancona, is one of Italy's most beautiful coastlines — white limestone cliffs plunging into turquoise water, with pebble beaches at Sirolo and Numana that rival anything in the Mediterranean. Inland, Ascoli Piceno's Piazza del Popolo — a travertine-paved oval surrounded by Renaissance loggias — is one of Italy's most beautiful piazzas. The Sibillini Mountains, named after the mythical Sibyl, offer wild hiking in a national park where golden eagles soar above flower-filled plateaus.
