Sondrio province — the Valtellina valley — stretches 120 km from Lake Como to the Swiss border, flanked by the Rhaetian Alps to the north and the Orobie Alps to the south. It's a world of dramatic mountain passes, terraced vineyards, Roman thermal baths, and one of Europe's great railway journeys. Here are the 12 essential experiences.
1. Drive the Stelvio Pass
48 hairpin turns climbing to 2,757 metres — the highest paved mountain pass in the Eastern Alps and one of the world's great driving roads. The eastern side from Prato allo Stelvio has the famous switchbacks; the western (Bormio) side is gentler but equally spectacular. Open late May to October. Even in August the summit is cold (5-10°C) with snowdrifts lining the road. The Stelvio National Park surrounds it — stop to hike among ibex and marmots.
2. Bormio Thermal Baths
Three thermal complexes fed by the same 37-41°C mineral spring used since Roman times. Bagni Vecchi is the highlight — a cave pool carved into the rock overlooking the valley, plus a Roman tunnel sauna. Bagni Nuovi is a grand 19th-century spa hotel with panoramic outdoor pools. Terme di Bormio is the modern family-friendly option. The outdoor pool at Bagni Vecchi, surrounded by mountains, is unforgettable in any season.
3. Bernina Express — UNESCO Train Journey
Depart Tirano for a 2-hour climb through 55 tunnels and across 196 bridges to St. Moritz, Switzerland. The train climbs to 2,253 metres without a rack railway — the highest adhesion railway in Europe. The Brusio spiral viaduct, the Morteratsch Glacier views, and the Alpine panorama from the Bernina Pass are the highlights. Panoramic carriages have ceiling windows. Book in advance in high season.
4. Valtellina Wine Road (Strada del Vino)
Follow the Strada del Vino through 2,500 km of terraced vineyards — Italy's largest terraced wine region. The south-facing slopes grow Nebbiolo (Chiavennasca) for Sforzato di Valtellina DOCG and Valtellina Superiore DOCG. Key stops: Nino Negri in Chiuro (historic cellars), ARPEPE in Sondrio (natural wines, vertical tastings), Triacca in Teglio (panoramic tasting room). The vineyards are a UNESCO candidate.
5. Eat at a Traditional Crotto
Crotti are natural stone caves with constant cool airflow — used for centuries to age cheese and wine. Traditional crotti now serve rustic Valtellinese food: pizzoccheri, sciatt (cheese fritters), bresaola, polenta taragna, and house wine. Best concentrations: Crotti di Cedrasco (near Sondrio), Crotti di Triangia, and Crotti di Chiavenna (70+ crotti). The experience is as memorable as the food.
6. Trekking in Stelvio National Park
Italy's largest national park (1,307 km²). Trails range from easy valley walks to glacier routes. The Valle dei Forni trail leads to the Forni Glacier — one of Italy's largest, dramatically receding. Wildlife: ibex, chamois, marmots, golden eagles, and the reintroduced bearded vulture. The Forni Refuge (2,178 m) serves hearty mountain food with glacier views.
7. Teglio — Pizzoccheri's Birthplace
A medieval village at 900 metres claiming to be the birthplace of pizzoccheri. The Pizzocchero d'Oro festival (September) sees restaurants compete for the best pizzoccheri. The Museo del Pizzocchero traces the dish's history. The 15th-century Palazzo Besta has Renaissance frescoes and Alpine views. Come hungry.
8. Castel Masegra, Sondrio
Sondrio's 13th-century castle, seat of the Salis family who governed the valley under the Grisons. The tower offers panoramic views across the Valtellina. 9. Sanctuary of Madonna di Tirano
A Renaissance pilgrimage church built 1505-1528 after a reported Marian apparition. The interior is a jewel box of frescoes, gilded stucco, and an extraordinary 16th-century organ with painted doors. The square outside, lined with cafés facing the Swiss border, is a perfect spot for a pre-Bernina Express coffee.
10. Mountain Biking the Alpine Passes
Bormio and Livigno transform from ski resorts to mountain bike destinations in summer. Lift-accessed downhill trails, cross-country routes through the Stelvio National Park, and the legendary Stelvio Pass descent — 1,800 metres of vertical drop over 48 hairpin bends. Bike rental and guided tours available in both resorts.
11. Fly Fishing the Adda River
The upper Adda River is one of Italy's premier fly-fishing destinations — crystal-clear water, wild brown trout, and stunning Alpine scenery. The 'No-Kill Zone' near Morbegno is internationally known. Guides and permits available through local associations. Best fishing: April to October.
12. Skiing Bormio & Livigno
Bormio (1,225-3,012 m) hosts 2026 Winter Olympic alpine skiing events — 50 km of pistes including the legendary Stelvio downhill course. Livigno (1,816-2,800 m) is duty-free, with 115 km of slopes, reliable snow, and a lively après-ski scene. Both resorts also offer extensive cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
