Savona is one of Liguria's most underrated cities — a historic port town with over two millennia of history that sits beautifully between the mountains and the Ligurian Sea. Located 45 kilometres southwest of Genoa on the Riviera di Ponente, Savona was once a powerful maritime republic and papal stronghold that rivalled Genoa for centuries. Today it rewards curious travellers with an extraordinary concentration of Renaissance architecture, medieval towers, and a surprising papal connection that most visitors never expect.
The city's centrepiece is the massive Priamar Fortress, a 16th-century Genoese fortification built on a rocky promontory overlooking the harbour. Inside its imposing walls you'll find the Civic Art Gallery (Pinacoteca Civica) and the Archaeological Museum, with artefacts spanning from the Bronze Age to the Renaissance. But Savona's most astonishing secret is its very own Sistine Chapel — the Cappella Sistina di Savona — commissioned by Pope Sixtus IV between 1481 and 1483. This ornate chapel, attached to the cathedral, predates its more famous Roman namesake and features a stunning Baroque interior with frescoed vaults and a richly decorated marble altar. The Cattedrale dell'Assunta itself is a magnificent Renaissance cathedral, while the 14th-century Torre Leon Pancaldo stands as the city's iconic medieval symbol at the harbour entrance.
Beyond its monuments, Savona is a living Ligurian city with colourful markets, excellent seafood restaurants, a famous ceramics tradition dating back centuries (neighbouring Albissola Marina, just 3 kilometres away, remains Italy's ceramics capital), and one of Italy's major cruise ports. Ferries depart regularly for Corsica, Sardinia, and Sicily, making Savona an ideal gateway to Mediterranean islands. The Lungomare Matteotti promenade offers scenic waterfront walks, and the surrounding coastline — stretching to Varazze, Finale Ligure, and beyond — provides some of the best beaches on the Italian Riviera.
Savona is extremely well connected by rail and road. The main train station sits in the city centre with frequent services to Genoa (45 minutes), Imperia (45 minutes), Sanremo (1 hour 20 minutes), Turin (2 hours), and Milan (2 hours 30 minutes). The A10 motorway connects Savona to Genoa and the French border, while the A6 heads north to Turin. The city's historic centre is compact and easily walkable — you can reach the Priamar Fortress, cathedral, and harbour within a 15-minute stroll. The Port of Savona is a major cruise terminal, so the city has excellent infrastructure for visitors. For exploring the wider Riviera di Ponente, the regional train line hugs the coast through Varazze, Finale Ligure, Alassio, and Sanremo. Albissola Marina's ceramics workshops are a pleasant 30-minute walk or 5-minute train ride from Savona station. Renting a car is useful for reaching hilltop villages in the Savonese hinterland, but not necessary for the coast.
