Spring (March-May) — Ideal for Exploring
Spring is the best time to visit Badajoz for comfortable sightseeing. March begins mild at 18°C, and by late May temperatures reach a pleasant 26°C. The Alcazaba, Plaza Alta, and riverside walks are at their most enjoyable. The surrounding countryside bursts into green — Extremadura's dehesa landscape is carpeted with wildflowers. In April, the Semana Santa processions in Badajoz are solemn and impressive. May's Feria de San José brings a week of flamenco, bullfights, and fairground fun.
Summer (June-August) — Hot but Alive
Summers are intensely hot with July and August highs regularly exceeding 35°C. The key is adapting to the Spanish rhythm — sightsee before 11am, enjoy a long lunch and siesta during peak heat, then explore again from 6pm onwards. Summer evenings are magical on Plaza Alta and along the Guadiana, where bars and terraces overflow with locals. Autumn (September-November) — Harvest Season
September and early October are wonderful in Badajoz — warm days at 27-30°C, cool evenings, and the beginning of the Extremaduran gastronomic season. This is the time for jamón ibérico harvesting, pimento drying (the famous pimentón de la Vera), and the first pressing of olive oil. The landscape of cork and holm oaks is beautiful. November is cooler and wetter but offers lower prices.
Winter (December-February) — Carnaval!
Winter is mild by European standards with daytime temperatures around 12-15°C and occasional rain. The highlight of the season — and indeed the entire Badajoz calendar — is the Carnaval de Badajoz in February. Declared of International Tourist Interest, it's one of Spain's biggest and most flamboyant carnivals, with parades, costumes, music, and dancing that take over the entire city.
