Zamora, the city of Romanesque art, sits on a rocky promontory above the Duero River in northwest Castile and Leon, at an elevation of around 650 metres. Its climate is continental Mediterranean: cold, occasionally frosty winters, hot dry summers, and two glorious shoulder seasons in spring and autumn that most visitors never discover. Choosing the right time to visit matters more here than in most Spanish cities, because Zamora's calendar is built around a few spectacular events — above all Semana Santa, whose processions are declared of International Tourist Interest and draw visitors from across Spain and Portugal.

Spring is Zamora's most important season. In 2026, Semana Santa runs from Sunday 29 March to Sunday 5 April, and it transforms the city. Seventeen brotherhoods carry 13 sculpted pasos — heavy floats depicting scenes of the Passion — through the medieval streets from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, accompanied by the hypnotic beating of tamboriles (small drums) and deep bombos (bass drums) that echo off the old stone walls. The most moving moment is the early hours of Good Friday, when the city falls silent and processions pass through candlelit streets lined with spectators.
Weather in March and April is cool and changeable — expect 12-16°C daytime highs and occasional rain, so pack layers and a light raincoat. By May the city warms to 18-22°C, the Romanesque churches open their doors to golden light, and the riverside terraces along the Duero fill up. Hotel prices are moderate in March, spike sharply during Semana Santa, then ease in May. If you want to experience Holy Week, book your eco hotel at least three months ahead.
Summer in Zamora is genuinely hot — July and August highs reach 28-32°C — but the city copes beautifully. Morning is the time for the cathedral, the castle and the 24 Romanesque churches, before the afternoon heat sends everyone into shady arcades and tapas bars. Evenings are spent on the Paseo del Río, the riverside walk below the old walls, where the temperature drops and families stroll until late.
Two festivals anchor the summer calendar. The Feria de San Pedro around 29 June brings music, dancing and fairground rides to the streets, and the patron saint's festivities in honour of San Atilano spill into early summer. August is notably quiet as many locals head north, which means lower prices and empty churches — a great month for slow travellers who don't mind the heat. The Arribes del Duero natural park, 40 minutes west, is at its best for boat trips through the 400-metre-deep canyons from April to October, with boat rides running daily in summer.
September is arguably the best month of the year in Zamora. The heat breaks, daytime temperatures hover at a perfect 22-26°C, and the city hosts the Fiestas de la Virgen de la Concha in early September — bullfights, concerts and processions that locals call the city's true patronal fiesta. The Duero valley glows gold as the leaves turn, and the vineyards of the Toro DO, just 30 km south, begin their harvest.
The vendimia (grape harvest) in Toro is the region's great autumn event. Tinta de Toro — a Tempranillo clone adapted to the harsh plateau climate — produces Spain's most powerful reds, and September and October bring tastings, bodega open days and harvest festivals in the walled town. October stays pleasant at 16-20°C, while November turns cooler and wetter — and, as a reward, hotel rates drop to their lowest outside winter. October is also an excellent month for walking the canyon rim trails of the Arribes, when the crowds have gone and the eagles and vultures are still active.
Winters in Zamora are cold — daytime highs of 5-10°C, with frost most mornings and the occasional dusting of snow on the rooftops. This is the season for the city's true character: the Romanesque churches are quiet and atmospheric, the cathedral's Byzantine-style cimborrio dome catches low winter light, and the Plaza Mayor's arcaded bars are full of locals drinking Toro red and eating chicharrones. December brings a charming Christmas market and nativity displays, and the Epiphany celebrations on 5-6 January include a well-loved cavalcade.
If you're on a budget, this is the time to come. Double rooms in good central hotels drop to EUR40-60 per night in January and February, and you will often have the castle and the churches almost to yourself. Pack a warm coat, gloves and comfortable boots — the medieval lanes are cobbled and the wind off the Duero bites. Getting to Zamora is easy: trains run from Madrid Chamartín in about 2 hours 15 minutes, and from Salamanca in 40 minutes, while the A-66 motorway puts the city 45 minutes north of Salamanca and 90 minutes from Bragança in Portugal.
