Zamora has a continental Mediterranean climate with cold winters, hot summers, and moderate rainfall. Its position on the Duero River at 650 metres elevation gives it a slightly milder climate than Ávila but cooler than the southern Meseta. The city's Romanesque churches and cathedral are best explored in good weather, but the famous Semana Santa processions in early spring are the real draw. Spring (March-May)
Spring is Zamora's most important season thanks to Semana Santa (Holy Week), declared of International Tourist Interest. The processions are among Spain's most solemn and spectacular — 17 brotherhoods carry 13 elaborate pasos through the old town, accompanied by the haunting sound of tamboriles (drums) and bombos (bass drums). The weather in March and April is cool (12-16°C) and can be rainy, so pack layers. May warms to 20°C. The city is noticeably busier during Semana Santa, so book eco hotels well in advance.
Summer (June-August)
Summer in Zamora is warm but pleasant, with highs of 28-32°C. The Duero riverbanks offer cooling breezes in the evening. The Arribes del Duero natural park is at its best for hiking and boat trips through the deep river canyons. The Feria de San Pedro (June 29) brings music and dancing to the streets. August is quieter as many locals head to the coast, making it a good time for a peaceful visit.
Autumn (September-November)
Autumn is the wine lover's season. The nearby Toro DO region harvests its Tinta de Toro grapes (a Tempranillo clone) in September-October. The vendimia (grape harvest) festivals in Toro town (30 km south) are lively. September weather is wonderful at 22-26°C. November is cooler and wetter but offers the cheapest hotel rates.
Winter (December-February)
Winters are cold (5-12°C daytime) with occasional frost and rare snow. The Romanesque churches and cathedral are atmospheric in winter light.
