Just south of Vitoria-Gasteiz — the region's often-overlooked capital, named European Green Capital in 2012 — the vineyards of Rioja Alavesa produce some of Spain's most celebrated Tempranillo wines. Flysch Route: Zumaia to Deba
One of Spain's most spectacular coastal walks, following the clifftops above the famous flysch geological formations — layers of rock spanning 60 million years, tilted nearly vertical by tectonic forces. The trail passes through holm oak forests, drops to hidden coves, and offers dramatic views of the layered rock platforms (best seen at low tide). Camino de Santiago — Basque Country Stages
The Camino del Norte (Northern Way) enters Spain at Irún and traverses the entire Basque coastline through San Sebastián, Zarautz, Deba, Markina, and Gernika before reaching Bilbao. Urkiola Natural Park Trails
The limestone peaks of Urkiola rise between Bizkaia and Araba provinces, crowned by the distinctive twin summits of Anboto (1,331 m) — mythical home of Mari, the supreme goddess of Basque mythology. Well-marked trails range from easy valley walks through beech and oak forests to challenging ridge scrambles. The sanctuary of Urkiola at the pass makes a natural starting point.
