The Aosta Valley has a mountain climate with significant variation by altitude. Aosta city at 583m has warm summers (25-30°C) and cold winters (2-7°C). The ski resorts at 1,200-2,050m are naturally cooler, with reliable snow cover from December to April. The region's orientation (east-west) means it receives less precipitation than the outer Alps, giving it some of Italy's sunniest Alpine weather. Winter is prime season in Aosta Valley. The region boasts five major ski areas. Courmayeur offers 100 km of varied pistes on the Italian side of Mont Blanc, with excellent intermediate terrain and off-piste opportunities. January and February offer the most reliable snow conditions and the lowest prices outside of holiday periods. The Sant'Orso Fair (January 30-31) in Aosta is the region's largest traditional fair, with over 1,000 craftspeople displaying wood carvings, lace, and local products. It's been running for over 1,000 years. March offers longer days, spring snow, and the Battle of the Queyash festival in Vérones. Spring is a transitional season. Lower resorts like Pila and La Thuile close by April, but Cervinia's glacier skiing continues through spring and into summer. May is particularly lovely for hiking on lower slopes and exploring the Roman sites in Aosta without summer crowds. The cable cars at Courmayeur run for sightseeing throughout spring.
Summer transforms Aosta Valley into a hiking and climbing paradise. The Tour du Mont Blanc, one of the world's great treks, passes through Courmayeur and the Val Ferret.
