Getting the Most from Killaloe
Killaloe sits about 20 km north-east of Limerick city (roughly 30 minutes by car), 45 minutes from Shannon Airport, and about 2.5 hours from Dublin. The easiest approach for drivers is the M7 to Limerick then the R463, which hugs the Shannon past Castleconnell and Montpelier. If you arrive by train, Limerick's Colbert Station connects to Dublin, Cork and Galway, and there are regular buses to Killaloe; the town is also a popular stop for boats cruising the Shannon.
The best way to see Killaloe is on foot. Start at the harbour, walk the bridge to Ballina for the view back over the cathedral, then follow the river walk south along the Shannon bank. The old town's lanes between the bridge and the cathedral hold craft shops, cafés and pubs where traditional music sessions are common in summer. Rent a kayak, SUP board or cruiser at Derg Marina to see the lake from the water, or drive 10 minutes to the woodlands of the Slieve Bernagh foothills for walking and cycling.
Killaloe also works well as a base for day trips: Limerick city and King John's Castle are half an hour away, Bunratty Castle and Folk Park 40 minutes, and the Burren and the Cliffs of Moher about an hour and a half by road. Closer still, the lakeside villages of Tuamgraney, Scarriff and Mountshannon along the East Clare shore each have their own character, pubs and views, and are connected by the East Clare Way walking route.
