"Scamming with unjustified additional charges, got ghosted despite their guarantees to return the money. Dirty rooms and unfriendly personell. The only good thing is the location."

"UPDATE to 6/7 owner response: You are correct that writing a review is quite easy, and as a matter of fact I am not a fan of the current online review system as I believe it's too heavily weighted towards the consumer vs businesses. This is precisely why I rarely, if ever, leave negative reviews. I instead choose to converse with a business privately to resolve issues, and this approach generally works very well. In this case however, it is obvious that City Hotel's leadership/ownership is simply taking advantage of a very unique situation and choosing not to do the right thing. You all are trying to get an insurance payment or keep our fully paid reservation only to have the ability to re-book the room again. It appears as though you're currently completely booked for our dates and would be able to book the room again if you were to refund our booking. Instead, you're looking to profit twice on it. If we are forced to stay at City Hotel (we can't afford to pay for this booking and a stay elsewhere), you will share in the risk of transporting my son up/down 3 flights of stairs. And... while I do appreciate the offer of a discount for a future booking, we both know that it's not very realistic to expect that I will be back to Amsterdam anytime soon with a relatively young family of 5. This is a trip that we're very excited about, since it's likely once in a lifetime.\n\nWe are booked at City Hotel Rembrandt Square a few weeks from now. The hotel has no elevator/lift, which we understood at the time of booking. Our son broke his leg this past weekend playing baseball and had to have a plate and screws inserted, so he will be in a wheelchair and on crutches for the next 6-8 weeks. We would like to continue with our plans to stay in Amsterdam, but of course he cannot navigate 3 flights of stairs on crutches (our room is on the 3rd floor). Our room is non-refundable, but the hotel appears to be completely booked during that time, and we've communicated with City Hotel asking that they please work with us because of the extenuating circumstances. They would easily be able to re-sell the room, but they are instead saying he will not be able to navigate the stairs (they will not assist either), that we should not stay with them, and that they will not refund us. I would avoid making any reservation with them whatsoever. We have asked multiple times, called, etc, but they will not budge. Their handling of this situation tells you everything you need to know about how ownership runs this hotel."

"I’d say for the location and the price it’s pretty good, the rooms are definitely very simple just a bed and a shower (no hair dryer or kettle/fridge which wasn’t so bad) The STAIRS though, oh my goodness we were on the third floor and I almost blew a kidney trying to get my suitcase up there, but they do advertise that there’s no elevators - it was just a much longer and steeper climb than I expected… super close to the centre of things you can definitely walk to most places and if not the tram is right out the front! Definitely a little run down though, we had a broken shower head and mould in the bathrooms but honestly the room seemed clean enough and we weren’t there much so it was fine for sleeping and as a base. They’re very serious about the security deposit, you pay 50euros a person at check in (to be refunded at check out if no issues) and it can be deducted if you have anyone over that isn’t on your booking, checking out past 11am, smoking weed in the rooms or normal stuff like damages/losing the key. (They check the room for damage before they check you out) 24hr reception which was great! would opt out of the breakfast, you can def get something nicer for 15euro a day. Overall it worked well for us, but definitely a bit more of a hostel vibe than a hotel - but that seemed pretty standard for the location :)"
