Bonifacio sits at Corsica's southern tip where the Mediterranean climate is at its most generous — long hot summers, mild winters, and more sunshine than almost anywhere else in France. But the timing of your visit makes a real difference to what you'll experience. This month-by-month guide covers everything: weather averages, sea temperatures, crowd levels, seasonal events, and when each activity is at its best.
Bonifacio enjoys a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, relatively wet winters. Thanks to its exposed southern position, it gets more sun and less rain than Corsica's northern towns. The Mistral wind can occasionally sweep through but the Strait of Bonifacio tends to moderate temperatures year-round.
Spring is one of the best-kept secrets for visiting Bonifacio. The maquis-covered hills burst into flower — wild rosemary, lavender, and broom fill the air with scent. Temperatures are pleasant for walking, and the tourist crowds haven't yet arrived.
Weather: 10-16°C. Occasional rain, increasing sunshine. Sea temperature: ~13°C. Spring equinox around 20 March. Crowds: Very low — you'll have the citadel almost to yourself. Events: The Fête du Printemps in Porto-Vecchio (late March) celebrates the start of the growing season. Activities: Hiking is excellent — the cliffs, the Capo Pertusato trail, and the Sentier des Douaniers are all cool and uncrowded. Cafés in the old town begin reopening for the season.
Weather: 12-18°C. More sunshine than March. Sea temperature: ~14°C. Crowds: Still low. Easter week brings a modest uptick from French tourists. Activities: Perfect for walking and cycling. The Bonifacio Cliffs Loop and the trail to Plage de la Tonnara are at their best. Boat services to the Lavezzi Islands start running (weather-dependent). The Bonifacio market in the marina square begins regular weekend hours.
Weather: 16-23°C. One of the best months. Sea temperature: ~17-19°C — brisk but brave swimmers can manage. Crowds: Moderate — pre-season buzz without the summer crush. Events: Corsica's Polyphonic Singing Festival (May) features performances throughout the island, including sometimes in Bonifacio's churches. Activities: Palombaggia and Santa Giulia beaches are quiet and beautiful. Hiking conditions are ideal — not too hot. The Lavezzi boat trips run daily from mid-May.
Summer is peak season — for good reason. The weather is reliably hot and sunny, the sea is warm, and every restaurant, bar, and excursion is operating at full capacity. But it's also when Bonifacio is busiest and most expensive.
Weather: 20-28°C. Long sunny days. Sea temperature: ~20-22°C — comfortable for swimming. Crowds: Building through the month. Still manageable in early June. Events: La Fête de la Musique (21 June) — live music in Bonifacio's streets and squares. Activities: Beach days, boat trips, and cliff walks all at their best. The Bastille Day fireworks display in mid-July is pre-empted by smaller village fêtes in late June. June strikes the best balance of good weather and bearable crowds.
Weather: 23-31°C. Peak heat. Sea temperature: ~23-24°C. Virtually no rainfall. Crowds: Maximum. Book accommodation months ahead. Events: Bastille Day (14 July) — Bonifacio's harbour fills with boats and evening fireworks illuminate the citadel. The Bonifacio Regatta attracts sailing enthusiasts. Activities: Everything is open. Beaches fill by 09:00. The Lavezzi Islands can get 500+ visitors per day. Morning is the best time for sightseeing to avoid the midday heat. Air-conditioned hotels are essential.
Weather: 23-31°C. Identical to July. Sea temperature: ~24-26°C — the warmest of the year. Crowds: Maximum — if anything, even busier than July as French holidaymakers take their annual leave. Activities: Same as July. Ferragosto (15 August) is a major Italian and Corsican holiday — expect even larger crowds. The wise traveller escapes to the quieter beaches of Santa Manza Bay or Rondinara. Book restaurant tables 2-3 days in advance.
Many locals consider September the finest month in Bonifacio. The sea is at its warmest, the crowds thin out, and the golden light over the limestone cliffs is extraordinary.
Weather: 19-27°C. Sea temperature: ~24°C — warmest of any month. Crowds: Moderate and declining. The first week is still busy but by mid-month the beaches quieten considerably. Events: La Rentrée — the grape harvest (vendange) begins in Corsica's inland vineyards. Some wine estates offer tastings. Activities: September is unbeatable for quality of experience. Beaches are spacious, the citadel is walkable in comfort, and the light for photography is superb. The Lavezzi Islands are at their most peaceful.
Weather: 15-22°C. Sea temperature: ~20-21°C — still swimmable for most. Increasing chance of rain. Crowds: Low. Many seasonal restaurants close mid-month. Events: The Chestnut Festival (Fête de la Châtaigne) takes place in nearby Bocognano and other Corsican villages — fresh chestnuts and chestnut flour products. Activities: Hiking season returns. The maquis turns deep green after the first autumn rains. A good time for cultural visits — the citadel museums, the marine cemetery, and the local wineries are all quiet.
Weather: 10-17°C. Noticeably cooler. Sea temperature: ~17°C. Rain becomes more frequent. Crowds: Very low. Many tourist facilities are closed. Activities: This is the quiet season. The citadel is empty and atmospheric in the low light. Day trips to Sartène and the inland prehistoric sites are worthwhile. Winter is also excellent for photography — dramatic clouds over the cliffs and empty streets.
Winter is Bonifacio at its most authentic — a working Corsican town rather than a tourist destination. The pace slows dramatically, many restaurants close, but the beauty of the limestone cliffs in the low winter sun is magnetic.
Weather: 8-14°C. Shortest days — sunset around 16:50. Rain on 7-10 days. Crowds: Minimal. Events: Christmas markets in Porto-Vecchio and Ajaccio. Bonifacio's streets are decorated with lights. Activities: Indoor activities come to the fore — Corsican food, wine tasting, and exploring the few open restaurants and bars. A winter walk along the cliff path in a good coat is bracing and beautiful.
Weather: 7-13°C. The coldest month. Sea temperature: ~12°C. Crowds: The quietest of the entire year. Events: Epiphany (6 January) — local traditions in Corsican villages. Activities: Great for bargain winter stays and genuine solitude. Many Bonifacio hotels offer sharply reduced rates. A hire car is essential as public transport is minimal and many amenities are seasonal.
Weather: 8-14°C. Slightly warmer than January. Days lengthening. Crowds: Still very low. Events: Carnival period — Porto-Vecchio and Sartène hold carnival parades. Activities: The almond trees begin to blossom in February — a hidden spectacle that photographers love. Walking conditions are reasonable on clear days. The beginning of spring's approach is palpable in the air.

June through September is the window for comfortable swimming. Peak sea temperatures of 24-26°C occur in August and September. Plage de Palombaggia and Plage de Santa Giulia are at their best in September when the water is warm but the summer crowds have thinned.
Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) are ideal for hiking. The Sentier des Douaniers coastal path, the Bonifacio Cliffs Loop, and the Capo Pertusato trail are all best tackled when temperatures are between 15-25°C. Summer hiking is possible but start before 08:00 and carry plenty of water.
Boat services to the Lavezzi Islands run from April to October, with the best conditions June-September when the sea is calm. July and August offer the most departures but also the most crowded boats and beaches. May and September offer a better balance.

June and September are the best months. June offers long days, temperatures of 20-28°C, sea temperatures around 20-22°C, and manageable crowds. September has equally warm weather (19-27°C), the warmest sea of the year (24°C), and declining crowds as the month progresses. Winter (November-March) is very quiet. Many restaurants and some hotels close for the season. Daytime temperatures hover between 8-15°C with occasional rain.
