Getting the Most Out of Amboise

Amboise is wonderfully accessible and easy to navigate, making it an ideal base for exploring the central Loire Valley. The town is served by its own railway station — Gare d'Amboise — with direct TER trains from Paris-Austerlitz taking approximately 1 hour 40 minutes. Alternatively, take the TGV from Paris-Montparnasse to Tours Saint-Pierre-des-Corps (1 hour), then a connecting train or taxi for the remaining 25 km east along the Loire. By car, the A10 motorway from Paris to Tours takes about 2.5 hours, followed by a scenic 25-minute drive along the D751 riverside road.

Once in Amboise, the town is compact and walkable. The railway station is a 10-minute walk from the town centre. The old town, Château d'Amboise, and Clos Lucé are all within a 15-minute walk of each other. For exploring further afield, bicycle rentals are available from several shops along the riverfront — the Loire à Vélo route runs right through town, with flat, well-signposted paths heading east to Chenonceau (12 km) and west to Tours (25 km). Electric bike rentals are widely available and recommended for the gentle hills.

Day trips are the real strength of an Amboise base. Chenonceau is just 10 km east by car or 14 km by bike along the Loire à Vélo route. Chaumont-sur-Loire is 20 km west by car. Chambord is 60 km north-east (about 45 minutes by car). Blois is 35 km east. Tours is 25 km west with excellent restaurants, museums, and the Cathédrale Saint-Gatien. For wine lovers, the vineyards of Montlouis-sur-Loire are across the river (10 minutes by car), and Vouvray is 15 minutes north-west. Amboise to Chenonceau Cycle Ride

A gentle 14 km ride along the Loire à Vélo route east from Amboise to Chenonceau. The route follows the river through the villages of La Croix-en-Touraine and Civray-de-Touraine, mostly on dedicated cycle paths. Flat terrain, suitable for all fitness levels. Allow 45 minutes each way. Combine with a visit to the château and lunch at a riverside café in Chenonceaux village.

Old Town Walking Tour

Start at Place Michel Debré, walk up the Rue Victor Hugo past half-timbered houses to the Château d'Amboise. Visit the château and the Saint-Hubert Chapel. Walk down through the medieval streets to Clos Lucé (Rue du Clos Lucé). Return via the Rue Nationale, past the Hôtel de Ville and the market square. Allow 2–3 hours with stops.
