With more than 300 days of sunshine a year, the Valencian Community is a year-round destination. But depending on what you want — beaches, festivals, hiking, or empty streets — the timing matters. This guide breaks down every season and month so you can plan the perfect trip in 2026.
The Valencian Community stretches along Spain's eastern Mediterranean coast. Its climate is typically Mediterranean: hot summers, mild winters, and two glorious shoulder seasons in spring and autumn when the weather is near-perfect. Whether you're heading to Valencia city for Las Fallas, Alicante for the Costa Blanca beaches, or Castellón for the quieter coast, this guide will help you pick the best time.
| Season | Months | Avg Temp | Crowds | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spring | Mar–May | 16–24°C | Moderate | Festivals, hiking, city breaks |
| Summer | Jun–Aug | 26–32°C | High | Beaches, water sports |
| Autumn | Sep–Nov | 15–27°C | Low–Moderate | Beach, hiking, food, lowest crowds |
| Winter | Dec–Feb | 8–18°C | Low | City breaks, cheap flights, culture |
Spring is arguably the best season to visit the Valencian Community. Temperatures are warm but not hot — think 16°C in March rising to 24°C in May. The region comes alive with its most famous festivals.
March is dominated by Las Fallas in Valencia (15–19 March), the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage festival where giant papier-mâché figures (ninots) fill the streets and are burned in a spectacular finale. Hotels in Valencia city book out months in advance, so plan ahead. Late March also sees the Magdalena Festival in Castellón, with parades, bullfights and the Pilgrimage of the Canyades.
In Buñol, the annual La Tomatina happens in August, but spring is a lovely time to visit the town and explore its castle and surrounding countryside without the crowds. For hikers, spring is ideal for the trails in Serra d'Irta Natural Park and Montgó Natural Park — the wildflowers are spectacular in April and May.
By May, beach weather begins. The water is still fresh but the sand is warm. Playa de San Juan in Alicante and Playa de la Malvarrosa in Valencia start getting busy on weekends. This is also a great month for cycling the Turia Park in Valencia or exploring the Albufera Natural Park by boat.
Summer in the Valencian Community is hot, dry and crowded — exactly what many travellers want. Daytime temperatures range from 26°C in June to 32°C in July and August, occasionally touching 38°C during heatwaves. The Mediterranean sea is at its warmest in August, reaching about 26°C.
June kicks off with Hogueras de San Juan in Alicante (20–24 June), where bonfires and fireworks light up the city. It's like Las Fallas but with fire as the central element. The beaches are busy but not yet packed. June is also a good month for the Costa del Azahar (Castellón coast) where beaches like Peñíscola and Benicàssim are less crowded than the Costa Blanca.
July and August are peak season. The Costa Blanca resorts — Benidorm, Alicante, Calpe, Altea, Jávea — are at maximum capacity. Prices double. Book eco-accommodation months in advance. This is the time for beach clubs, water parks (Aqualandia in Benidorm, Aquópolis in Valencia) and evening paseo walks along the Explanada de España in Alicante.
The highlight of August is La Tomatina (last Wednesday of August) in Buñol. Thousands of participants throw over 100 tonnes of tomatoes in the streets. It's chaotic, messy and unforgettable. Book accommodation in Valencia city and take the train to Buñol for the day.
If you prefer quiet, avoid August on the coast entirely. Head inland to mountain villages like Guadalest (Alicante province) or Morella (Castellón province) for cooler temperatures and empty streets.
For many locals, autumn is the real best time to visit the Valencian Community. The weather is still warm — 27°C in September, 21°C in October, 16°C in November — but the crowds have gone. Prices drop. The sea is warm from the summer heat.
September is perfect for beach visits. The Playa de San Juan and Playa del Postiguet in Alicante are still swim-friendly but quiet. The Albufera Natural Park is glorious in the golden autumn light — sunset boat trips are a must. This is also harvest season for Valencia oranges and the start of the turrón (nougat) season in Jijona.
October is hiking prime time. The Montgó Natural Park, Serra de Mariola and Peñagolosa are at their most beautiful, with cooler temperatures and clear skies. It's also a fantastic month for city breaks in Valencia, Alicante and Castellón — the City of Arts and Sciences and Valencia Cathedral are far less crowded. Valencia's Mercado Central is abundant with autumn produce: mushrooms, pumpkin, sweet potatoes and pomegranates.
November is the quietest month. Many seasonal beach hotels close. It's a great time for cultural tourism — exploring La Lonja de la Seda (UNESCO World Heritage), the Palmeral of Elche, or the Misteri d'Elx performances. Hotel prices are at their lowest.
Winter in the Valencian Community is mild compared to northern Europe. Daytime temperatures range from 15–18°C, dropping to 6–8°C at night. Rain is more common but still infrequent — December and January each see about 6–8 rainy days.
This is the best season for budget travel. Flights and accommodation are cheapest, attractions are empty, and the city centres are atmospheric. Valencia at Christmas is delightful: lights along the old town, the Mercado de Navidad at Plaza de la Reina, and roscón de reyes in bakeries for Three Kings' Day (6 January).
Alicante sees plenty of winter sun — perfect for walks along the Explanada de España and up to Santa Bárbara Castle for panoramic views. Castellón has its Fira de Santa Llúcia in December with artisan markets. The Peñíscola Castle is dramatic under winter skies, and you'll have it nearly to yourself.
Winter is also the season for turrón and horchata — Jijona (Alicante province) produces the famous almond nougat, and local cafes serve horchata de chufa with fartons (sweet breadsticks). January is ideal for hiking in the lower hills — the Serra d'Irta coastal trail is pleasant even in January.
| Festival | Location | When | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Las Fallas | Valencia | 15–19 Mar | Giant sculptures, fireworks, street parties, burning ceremony |
| Magdalena Festival | Castellón | Late Mar | Parades, bullfights, pilgrimage, concerts |
| Semana Santa | Región-wide | Late Mar–Apr | Religious processions, traditional music, Easter feasts |
| Hogueras de San Juan | Alicante | 20–24 Jun | Bonfires, fireworks, beach parties, burning of sculptures |
| La Tomatina | Buñol | 26 Aug | Tomato fight, music, street festival |
| Misteri d'Elx | Elche | 14–15 Aug | UNESCO medieval mystery play in Basilica de Santa María |
Best for beaches: June to September. July and August are hottest and busiest. September offers warm sea and empty sands — the sweet spot.
Best for hiking: March to May and October to November. Avoid July and August — trails are exposed, water is scarce, and the heat is intense. Montgó Natural Park, Serra d'Irta and Peñagolosa are best in spring and autumn.
Best for festivals: March (Las Fallas), June (Hogueras), August (La Tomatina). Plan accommodation 3–6 months ahead for all major festivals.
Best for budget travel: November to February (excluding Christmas/New Year). Hotel prices drop 40–60% compared to August. Flights are cheapest in January and November.
Best for food lovers: Year-round, but October to April covers the turrón season (Jijona), the orange harvest (November–March), and the best paella weather — cool enough to enjoy a long lunch.
If you can choose only one month, make it September. The Mediterranean is still warm enough for swimming, the beaches are quiet after August's exodus, the hiking is perfect, accommodation prices drop, and the Valencian orange harvest begins. September is when the Valencian Community is at its most relaxed and beautiful.
For festival lovers, March (Las Fallas) is unmissable. For pure beach relaxation, June beats July and August — same sun, fewer crowds. For hiking and culture with minimal spend, October and November are hard to beat.
