Essential Ávila Experiences
1. Walk the City Walls
The walls of Ávila are Spain's most complete Romanesque fortification, stretching 2.5 km with 88 towers, 2,500 battlements, and nine gates. Built between 1090 and 1120 under King Alfonso VI, they were pivotal in the Reconquista. You can walk a 1.4 km section of the ramparts from Puerta del Alcázar to Puerta de la Estrella. The views from above are spectacular — the old town's granite buildings form a sea of grey stone, punctuated by cathedral, church, and palace spires. Entry EUR5. Night visits in summer with dramatic lighting.
2. Visit the Cathedral
Spain's first Gothic cathedral, built from 1140 onward. Its unique design integrates with the city walls — the apse forms one of the defensive towers. Inside, the Chapel of El Canto features a magnificent alabaster altarpiece by Alonso de Berruguete (1545), considered one of the finest Spanish Renaissance works. The cathedral museum houses medieval manuscripts and Flemish tapestries.
3. Cuatro Postes Viewpoint
1 km west of the walls, this granite monument of four Doric columns supporting a cross offers the best panoramic view of the walled city. According to tradition, it marks the spot where the 7-year-old Teresa was stopped by her uncle from running away to Moorish lands to be martyred. Sunset here, watching the walls turn golden, is one of Castile's great experiences.
Day Trip: Sierra de Gredos (60 km, 1 hour)
Ávila's mountain range is a stunning natural park with Spain's highest peaks south of Madrid. The Pico Almanzor (2,591 m) is the highest. Hiking trails, mountain villages like Hoyos del Espino, and the Gredos Gorge are highlights. The Circo de Gredos trail (10 km, 4 hours) to the turquoise Laguna Grande is the area's classic hike.
