Ávila sits at 1,132 metres on the Meseta Central, giving it a continental Mediterranean climate with strong temperature swings. Winters are cold and often snowy; summers are warm but not as extreme as southern Spain. The altitude means cool, clear nights even in summer. The best time for most visitors is spring or autumn when temperatures are mild and the light is perfect for photography of the famous granite walls.
Spring (March-May)
Spring is magnificent in Ávila. March remains chilly (10-14°C), but April warms to 16°C and May reaches a pleasant 20°C. The walls are surrounded by green fields and wildflowers. Holy Week (Semana Santa) processions in Ávila are among Spain's most atmospheric, with hooded penitents and flower-covered floats processed through the narrow streets. The Feast of Saint Teresa (March 28) includes pilgrimages and local celebrations. Perfect for wall walking and hiking in the nearby Sierra de Gredos.
Summer (June-August)
Summer is warm and dry with highs of 28-30°C. Unlike Madrid (only 110 km away), Ávila's altitude keeps temperatures manageable. The walls often host medieval festivals and night-time markets. The "Ávila a las Ocho" concert series fills the plazas with music. The longer daylight hours (9:30pm sunsets) allow for extended sightseeing. Evenings require a light jacket due to the altitude. Autumn (September-November)
September is golden in Ávila — the afternoon light on the granite walls creates stunning photo opportunities. Temperatures are 18-24°C in early autumn. Winter (December-February)
Winter is cold and atmospheric. Daytime temperatures hover around 7-10°C, and snow dusts the walls several times a season — a truly magical sight. Christmas markets fill the Plaza del Mercado Chico. Saint Teresa's feast day (October 15) actually falls in autumn but the winter season around her December celebrations (the Novena) brings pilgrims.
