Cuneo is a city of two identities — and that's precisely what makes its seasonal appeal so broad. In winter, it's a cosy base for skiing in the Maritime Alps and truffle hunting in the Langhe. In summer, it's the starting point for Alpine hikes and vineyard cycling, with its 534m elevation keeping temperatures comfortable when the plains below swelter. Spring (March–May) 🌸 — Blossoms & Quiet Vineyards

Spring is when Cuneo shakes off its Alpine winter and the surrounding valleys burst into green. March is still cool (5–14°C) with snow possible on the higher peaks, and the ski slopes at Limone Piemonte operate through early April in good snow years. By mid-April, the Gesso and Stura rivers run full with snowmelt, and wildflowers carpet the valley floors.

May is a glorious month. Temperatures reach 18–20°C, the Hazel orchards of the Langhe are in leaf, and the Tuesday market in Piazza Galimberti fills with spring produce — wild asparagus, artichokes, the first strawberries of the season. The Langhe vineyards are quiet before summer tourism, making it the ideal time for cycling the Barolo wine route without traffic. Hotel prices are 20–30% lower than summer peak.

Summer (June–August) ☀️ — Alpine Hiking & Mountain Air

Cuneo's 534m elevation is its summer superpower. While Turin and the Po Valley bake at 32–35°C, Cuneo enjoys a fresher 25–28°C with mountain breezes and cool evenings. It's the prime season for the Parco Naturale delle Alpi Marittime, where high-altitude trails open in late June, revealing alpine meadows, glacial lakes, and the chance to spot ibex and golden eagles. The Terme di Valdieri thermal baths — natural hot springs at 1,400m — are at their most inviting.

The Parco Fluviale Gesso e Stura, Cuneo's riverside green lung, comes alive with cyclists, joggers, and families picnicking under poplar trees. The Festa di San Michele (29 September, Cuneo's patron saint) anchors late summer, but July and August bring sagre (food festivals) to surrounding villages — chestnut festivals, cheese fairs, and wine celebrations. Autumn (September–November) 🍂 — Harvest & Truffle Season

Autumn is when Cuneo's gastronomic identity reaches its peak. September brings the grape harvest (vendemmia) to the Langhe, and the hills turn a patchwork of gold, crimson, and russet. Vineyards buzz with pickers, wineries open their doors, and the scent of fermenting Nebbiolo fills the air. It's the best time for wine touring — warm enough for outdoor tastings, cool enough for comfortable cycling.

October is white truffle season, and the province of Cuneo is at the heart of it. The Alba White Truffle Fair (Fiera Internazionale del Tartufo Bianco d'Alba), 70km away, draws gourmands from around the world. But Cuneo itself has excellent truffle hunting in the surrounding valleys — book a truffle hunt with a local trifolao and their trained dog. The Cuneesi al Rhum chocolates of Arione taste even better in crisp autumn air. November is quieter, foggy in the valleys but incredibly atmospheric, with mushroom and chestnut festivals filling the weekends.

Winter (December–February) ❄️ — Skiing, Chocolate & Cosy Arcades

Winter transforms Cuneo into a snow-dusted Alpine town with a personality all its own. The Maritime Alps receive reliable snowfall from December, and Limone Piemonte (20km, 25 min drive) fires up its lifts across 80km of slopes — a proper ski resort without the crowds or prices of the Dolomites. Cross-country skiing trails thread through the Valle Stura and Valle Gesso.

In the city, the arcaded streets of Via Roma and Piazza Galimberti prove their worth — you can walk the entire centre under cover, stopping for hot chocolate at Arione (where the Cuneesi al Rhum were born) or a bicerin (Piedmont's layered coffee-chocolate-cream drink) at a historic café. The Christmas market fills Piazza Galimberti from late November, and the surrounding hills offer snowshoe trails and cosy rifugi serving polenta, fonduta, and Barolo by the fire. Hotel prices are at their annual low outside of ski weekends and the Christmas/New Year period.
