From gentle urban strolls past Roman and medieval landmarks to longer hikes into the surrounding Abruzzo countryside, there are routes for every fitness level. The city's belvedere terraces reward walkers with spectacular panoramas of the Maiella, Gran Sasso, and the Adriatic Sea. Here are three recommended walks.
Start at Piazza San Giustino and the Cathedral of San Giustino, then descend through the medieval alleyways past the 1st-century BC Roman theatre ruins near Piazza Giambattista Vico, continuing to Piazza dei Martiri and the Museo della Città. Return via Corso Marrucino past elegant Baroque palazzos and historic cafes. The route covers all major historic landmarks on mostly pedestrianised streets with gentle inclines. Highlights include the Teatro Marrucino opera house facade and the 16th-century monastery housing the National Archaeological Museum of Abruzzo.

From the Villa Comunale, continue east along the ridge path through the San Martino neighbourhood, following the panoramic route with uninterrupted views toward the Adriatic coast. This quiet residential walk passes through olive groves and small market gardens, offering a glimpse of everyday life in Chieti's outskirts. The path is unpaved in sections so wear sturdy shoes.
The ridge offers excellent photo opportunities at every turn, particularly at golden hour when the light hits the mountains. The turnaround point is the Chiesa di San Martino, a small 14th-century church with a simple Romanesque bell tower. Return the same way or catch the local bus back to the centre from Via San Martino.
