Mild days, occasional showers, long evenings
Spring is widely considered the best time to visit Angers, and it's easy to see why. April brings the first reliably mild days with temperatures climbing from 13°C to around 17°C by month's end. The city's parks — Jardin des Plantes, Jardin du Mail, the château's formal gardens — burst into colour with magnolias, cherry blossoms, and the famous wisteria that drapes over centuries-old stone walls in the old quarter.
May is arguably the sweet spot. Daytime highs settle around 18–20°C, rain eases compared to April, and the days stretch past 9pm. The Île Saint-Aubin nature reserve floods in early spring (which is actually its natural state), creating stunning wetland landscapes for birdwatching; the ferry service typically starts running in April.
Warm to hot, driest months, long daylight hours
Summer transforms Angers into an outdoor-living city. July and August are the warmest months, with average highs of 26–28°C and occasional heatwave days pushing above 32°C. These are also the driest months — rainfall drops to around 35–45mm compared to 55–60mm in winter months. Daylight stretches from before 6:30am to well past 10pm, giving you extraordinary long evenings for riverside walks and terrace dining.
The Festival d'Anjou (June–July) is the cultural highlight — open-air theatre performances staged in the gardens and courtyards of Loire châteaux, including sometimes the Château d'Angers itself. Cool to cold, shorter days, Christmas markets in December
Winter in Angers is not for everyone, but it has a distinctive appeal for those who prefer their cities quiet and authentic. Temperatures hover between 3°C and 8°C from December through February, with occasional dips below freezing. Snow is rare — perhaps one or two light dustings a year that melt quickly. Rainfall is moderate and steady, with grey skies more common than dramatic storms.
The highlight of winter is unquestionably the Angers Christmas market, which typically runs from late November through late December. Place du Ralliement and surrounding streets fill with wooden chalets selling Anjou wines, mulled cider, artisan crafts, foie gras, and local specialties. Dress warmly and bring waterproof shoes. The Maine River can be moody and atmospheric in winter fog — lovely for photography. Terra Botanica is closed from November to March. Indoor activities — the château, museums, Cointreau distillery, wine tastings in heated cellars — are your friends this season.
May, June, and September are ideal — warm enough for comfortable riding, dry paths, and long days without the peak-summer heat. The Angers-to-Saumur stretch (50 km) is flat and well-signed.
