Summer is the busiest and warmest season. Average highs climb from 22°C in June to 27–28°C in July and August. Occasional heatwaves push temperatures above 35°C, which can feel intense during long Sanctuary processions. The cooling waters of the Gave de Pau are a welcome relief. July and August also bring afternoon thunderstorms in the mountains — if hiking, start early and be off exposed ridges by mid-afternoon. The nightly candlelit rosary procession (torchlight procession) runs from Easter to late October daily, and it's at its most atmospheric in the warm summer evenings.

Autumn (September–November)

September is arguably the best month to visit Lourdes. The weather remains warm (18–25°C), the summer crowds have thinned, and the Pyrenees trails are still accessible. Lourdes is not just a sanctuary town — it's a base camp for some of the finest hiking in the Pyrenees. The main hiking season runs from May to October. The Cirque de Gavarnie trails open as snow melts, typically from late May. High-altitude routes like the GR10 long-distance trail and the climb to the Brèche de Roland are best from mid-June to mid-September. By October, snow begins to dust the higher passes and trail closures begin in earnest.

For day hikes from Lourdes, the window is wider. The Lac de Lourdes circuit is walkable year-round. The Chemin de Croix at the Sanctuary is a paved path. Pic du Jer is accessible via funicular in all seasons, though the walking trail up is best attempted April–October.
