The city of roughly 106,000 people (±420,000 in the metropolitan area) sees distinct seasonal rhythms shaped by its coastal proximity, its university calendar, and the annual ebb and flow of history tourism to the nearby D-Day beaches. Caen has a classic oceanic climate (Cfb in the Köppen classification), meaning mild winters, warm but rarely hot summers, and rain distributed across all twelve months. Average annual rainfall is around 700 mm — comparable to London and less than Manchester, for reference. The highlight of late spring is the arrival of the Foire de Pâques (Easter Fair) in the city centre, with rides and local food stalls. June is dominated by the D-Day anniversary. The week of 1-8 June sees thousands of visitors, veterans, diplomats, and media converge on Caen and the coastal landing zones. The Caen Memorial Museum hosts ceremonies, lectures, film screenings, and the international parade of veterans. Book accommodation at least three to four months ahead if you plan to attend. July and August bring families and school groups. The Caen-la-Mer tourist office runs free guided walking tours in English on summer weekends. The beaches at Ouistreham (Sword Beach) are popular for sunbathing and swimming, and the Saturday morning market at Place Courtonne overflows with summer produce — strawberries from the Orne valley, local cheeses, and fresh seafood from the port.

September is the best-kept secret of Caen tourism. The weather is still warm (highs 18-20°C), the summer crowds have melted away, and the city’s student population returns, bringing energy back to the restaurants and cafés around the Université de Caen campus. Hotel prices drop back to spring levels. The sea temperature in the Channel remains warm enough for swimming at Ouistreham through early September.
October is the month of the Route du Cidre (Cider Route), a driving or cycling trail through the Pays d’Auge south-west of Caen, passing orchards, cider farms, and Calvados distilleries. Many estates open for tastings during the harvest period. October weather is cooler (highs 14-16°C) and rain becomes more frequent, but the autumn colours in the Jardin Botanique and along the Orne riverbanks are spectacular.
November is quiet. The Caen Memorial Museum, Église Saint-Pierre, and the abbeys are all open, but outdoor sightseeing requires a raincoat. This is an excellent month for indoor-focused travellers who want the museums almost to themselves. The Christmas market begins setting up in the last week of November on Place de la République.
Winter in Caen is underrated. Yes, it is cold (daytime highs 7-9°C) and the daylight is short (sunset around 5 PM in December), but the city has a distinct charm in its off-season. The Christmas market on Place de la République runs through December, with wooden chalets selling mulled wine (vin chaud), local cheeses, and artisanal Calvados chocolates. A temporary ice-skating rink is installed in the city centre.
January and February are the low season. Hotel rates drop to their annual minimum, with many three-star rooms available for EUR45-55 per night.
