Annecy is not a city you visit for museums and monuments alone. The lake is the main attraction, the mountains are the backdrop, and the Old Town is the stage. What makes Annecy special is how easily you can move between these three elements. One morning you are swimming in Europe's cleanest lake. By lunch you are eating tartiflette on a canal-side terrace. By afternoon you are cycling the Tour du Lac along dedicated paths through lakeside villages. By evening you are hiking to a viewpoint on the Semnoz massif for sunset over the Bauges mountains. Not many destinations can deliver that range of experiences in a single day.

Old Town & Canals
Palais de l'Isle
The most recognisable building in Annecy. This 12th-century triangular island fortress in the middle of the Thiou canal has served as a prison, courthouse, mint, and now a museum of local history. The interior is modest — a few rooms of exhibits on Annecy's history and the building's various uses — but the architecture is the real draw. The stone vaulted cellars, the narrow spiral staircases, and the views of the canal from the upper windows make it a 45-minute visit that you will not forget. Open daily, closed on certain public holidays. Head there early (before 10am) to beat the queues and shoot photos of the exterior without people in the frame.
Chateau d'Annecy
The hilltop castle that defines Annecy's skyline. Originally the residence of the Counts of Geneva in the 12th-16th centuries, it now houses the Musee-Chateau with collections of Alpine art, regional furniture, photographic archives, and a fascinating gallery on Lake Annecy's natural history. The Logis Saint-Pierre tower offers the best panoramic view of the town, lake, and surrounding mountains — on a clear day you can identify La Tournette, the Dents de Lanfon, and the Semnoz summit. A 10-minute uphill walk from the Palais de l'Isle, passing through some of the Old Town's most picturesque streets. Closed Tuesdays.
Pont des Amours & Jardins de l'Europe
The Pont des Amours (Lovers' Bridge) is a charming iron footbridge built in 1907 that crosses the Thiou canal at the entrance to the Jardins de l'Europe. Legend has it that couples who kiss on the bridge will stay together forever. The Jardins de l'Europe is a romantic English-style lakeside park planted in 1863, with winding paths, century-old trees, a small bandstand, and benches facing the lake. It connects directly to the lakeside promenade and the Voie Verte cycle path. A perfect spot for a morning coffee or an evening stroll while watching the swans and paddleboats on the canal.
Lake Activities
Swimming at Lake Annecy
Lake Annecy is one of the cleanest lakes in Europe, and swimming here is the defining summer experience. The main public beaches are Plage d'Albigny (a large grassy area north of the Old Town with shallow water, ideal for families), Plage des Marquisats (closer to town, with a diving platform and volleyball nets), and Plage de Talloires (quieter, on the eastern shore, surrounded by trees). Water temperatures reach 22-24 degrees C in July and August, and the lake's clarity is extraordinary — you can see 10-14 metres down on calm days. Free entry. Showers and basic facilities available. During July and August, arrive by 10am to secure a spot on the best beaches.
Boat Cruises on Lake Annecy
Several companies operate boat cruises from the pier at the Jardins de l'Europe. The standard one-hour cruise (EUR15) runs across the northern basin of the lake, past the Imperial Palace and Annecy-le-Vieux. The two-hour cruise (EUR22) goes as far as Talloires, passing the Roc de Chere nature reserve and the Chateau de Menthon-Saint-Bernard. Audio guides available in English and French. Sunset cruises (EUR25, with a glass of local wine) are the most popular option and sell out regularly in summer. Electric and solar-powered boats have largely replaced diesel on the lake, in keeping with Annecy's strict environmental protections.
Paddleboarding, Kayaking & Sailing
Water sports are a major part of the Annecy summer experience. Stand-up paddleboards can be rented from kiosks along the Marquisats and Albigny beaches for EUR12-15 per hour. Kayaks and pedalos cost EUR15-20 per hour. The calm, sheltered waters of the northern lake basin are ideal for beginners. For sailing, the Centre Nautique d'Annecy offers dinghy and catamaran rental by the hour or half-day, with lessons available in English. The best water sports conditions are from late May to early September, when the lake is warm and the afternoon winds from the south-east create ideal sailing breezes on the wider southern part of the lake.
Cycling
Tour du Lac d'Annecy
The most popular cycling route in the region and one of the finest lakeside rides in Europe. The 40 km loop circles Lake Annecy on dedicated cycle paths and quiet lakeside roads. Starting from the Old Town, head south along the Voie Verte — a converted railway line that hugs the western shore with uninterrupted lake views. Continue through the villages of Sevrier, Saint-Jorioz, and Doussard, where the route turns north along the quieter eastern shore through Talloires and Menthon-Saint-Bernard before returning to Annecy. The route is mostly flat and suitable for all fitness levels. E-bikes (EUR35/day) are widely available and make the ride effortless. Bikes can be rented from Roul' ma Poule near the Old Town or from Velodenacy hire stations across the city. The best direction is clockwise (start southwest), which keeps you on the lake side of the road for the entire ride.
Hiking & Mountain Activities
Semnoz Summit Trail
Drive or take the bus to the Col de Semnoz (1,450 metres), then follow the GR de Pays trail to the summit at 1,704 metres. The trail winds through alpine meadows and pine forests, emerging at the summit cross with a panoramic view that takes in Lake Annecy, the Bauges massif, and the Mont Blanc range on clear days. The summit also has a small cafe, a wildlife observatory, and a ski lift in winter. The descent via the same route takes about 1.5 hours. Alternatively, continue to the Cret de Chatillon viewpoint for a different angle. Best done in June-September when the wildflowers are in bloom and the alpine restaurant is open. In winter, the trail is suitable for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
Mont Veyrier
The classic hike with the best effort-to-view ratio near Annecy. Starting from the Chalet de la Montagne d'Age de Veyrier (reachable by bus line 5 from the city centre, then a 30-minute uphill walk), the trail climbs through limestone terrain with views over the lake opening up from the start. The summit at 1,291 metres offers a breathtaking 180-degree panorama of the lake, the Aravis range, and Geneva. The final section involves some easy via ferrata-style sections with fixed cables, but no technical climbing is required. Allow a full morning or afternoon, and bring water and sun protection — there is no shade on the upper slopes.
Paragliding from the Col de la Forclaz
Annecy is one of Europe's premier paragliding destinations, and the Col de la Forclaz, above Talloires, is the main launch site. Tandem flights with a certified pilot cost EUR90-120 and include 20-30 minutes of soaring above the lake with views that stretch from Mont Blanc to Geneva. No experience necessary — you just run off the launch slope and let the pilot handle the rest. The thermal conditions are best from late morning to mid-afternoon, and the landing field is on the shores of the lake near Talloires, where you can rinse off with a swim. Several companies offer flights, including Annecy Parapente and Fly to Annecy. Book in advance during July and August.
Day Trips from Annecy
Gorges du Fier
Just 10 km west of the city, this dramatic limestone canyon is accessed via a suspended footbridge bolted into the cliff face, 25 metres above the Fier river. The walkway extends 150 metres through the narrowest section of the gorge, where the canyon walls close to within a few metres of each other. Open April to September. Entry EUR7. Allow 1 hour. The early morning light illuminates the limestone to a golden colour that makes for the best photographs. Arrive before 10am in summer to avoid queues.
Chateau de Menthon-Saint-Bernard
A fairy-tale castle perched on a rocky outcrop above the lake, 15 km east of Annecy between Veyrier-du-Lac and Talloires. The castle has been inhabited by the same family since the 13th century and is said to have inspired the Disney castle design for Sleeping Beauty. The interior features period furniture, tapestries, and a stunning collection of armour. Open for guided tours from Easter to October. Entry EUR10. The views of Lake Annecy from the castle terrace are among the best on the eastern shore.
Chamonix-Mont-Blanc
85 km east of Annecy (about a 1-hour drive), Chamonix sits at the foot of Mont Blanc, Western Europe's highest peak at 4,809 metres. The Aiguille du Midi cable car takes you to 3,842 metres for a vertiginous view of the Mont Blanc massif. The Mer de Glace train and the Montenvers glacier viewpoint are also must-sees. Day trips from Annecy are feasible but start early — depart by 7:30am to make the most of your day. The drive through the Aravis mountains and the Arve valley is spectacular in itself.
Geneva
42 km north of Annecy (45 minutes by car, 1.5 hours by bus), Geneva offers a change of pace with its Swiss lake, the Jet d'Eau fountain, the old town, and the UN headquarters.
